A beautifully shaped pendant, tiny character or set of handmade beads can go from exciting to disappointing in one oven session. The good news is that successful curing is much less mysterious than it first appears. This polymer clay baking guide will help you bake your makes evenly, keep colours looking their best and avoid the common problems that leave clay brittle, scorched or under-cured.
Polymer clay is designed to harden at a low oven temperature. It does not dry out in the way air-dry clay does, so your project can stay workable until you are happy with every detail. Once it is cured according to the manufacturer’s directions, it becomes strong enough for all sorts of creative projects, from jewellery and miniature scenes to decorations, keepsakes and personalised gifts.
Polymer Clay Baking Guide: Check the Packet First
Different polymer clay brands have slightly different curing instructions. The temperature and baking time printed on your packet are always the best starting point, even when a friend uses another brand successfully at a different setting. Many clays cure somewhere between 110°C and 130°C, but the exact recommendation matters.
Do not turn up the heat to speed things along. Polymer clay needs steady, gentle heat rather than a blast of high temperature. Too much heat can darken pale colours, create shiny patches, distort delicate pieces or cause an unpleasant smell. If clay ever smokes, switch off the oven, ventilate the room and allow everything to cool before opening the door fully.
An oven thermometer is one of the most useful additions to a clay-making kit. Domestic ovens, especially fan ovens, can run hotter or cooler than their dial suggests, and the temperature may rise and fall during baking. A small thermometer lets you see what is happening where your tray actually sits. For careful work such as jewellery, detailed miniatures or light-coloured designs, it can make a real difference.
Prepare a Tray That Supports Your Make
Use a dedicated baking tray, tile or oven-safe ceramic plate for polymer clay projects, rather than placing clay straight onto an oven rack. A flat ceramic tile is particularly handy because it provides a stable surface and helps reduce sudden temperature changes.
Line your surface with baking parchment or plain copier paper if you want to minimise marks on the back of a piece. Textured paper towels are not ideal, as their pattern can transfer to warm clay. For rounded beads, place them on a folded strip of card or a purpose-made bead rack so they do not develop a flat side.
Before baking, check that every part of your project is properly supported. Thin ears, petals, handles and raised details are more likely to sag if they hang over an edge. Make small props from tightly folded aluminium foil, or nestle the piece into a bed of baking soda if the shape needs gentle all-round support. Keep the soda separate from food use afterwards.

Set the Temperature Before the Clay Goes In
Preheat the oven fully, then check the thermometer before adding your tray. Putting polymer clay into an oven that is still climbing towards temperature can make timing less predictable. Place the tray on the middle shelf where the heat is usually most even, unless your oven’s instructions suggest otherwise.
If your oven has a powerful fan, baking slightly more gently can help, but do not guess at a new temperature. Start with the brand recommendation and use the thermometer to judge whether the oven is overshooting. A loose foil tent over the tray can protect the surface from direct heat and is especially useful for white, cream, pastel and translucent clay. Make sure the foil does not touch the clay itself.
Avoid the microwave. Polymer clay must be cured in a conventional oven according to its package directions. An air fryer is also not a dependable substitute unless the clay manufacturer specifically says it is suitable and you can accurately monitor its temperature.
How Long Should Polymer Clay Bake?
Baking time depends mainly on the thickness of the clay, not the overall size of the project. A large but thin plaque may need less time than a small, chunky charm. Many brands give their curing time as a number of minutes for each 6 mm of thickness, but the packet should always decide the final timing.
Measure the thickest part of the piece. For example, the centre of a sculpted animal, a layered pendant or a thick bead is the area that needs enough time to cure through. Do not shorten the bake because the outer surface looks done. Polymer clay can appear firm while the middle has not cured fully.
A slightly longer bake at the correct temperature is often better than rushing, provided it remains within the brand’s guidance and is protected from excessive heat. This is where a thermometer and foil tent earn their place. They allow you to cure thicker makes more confidently without relying on an unreliable oven dial.
If you are combining brands, use care. Their recommended temperatures may not match, and a setting that is right for one clay can damage another. For a first mixed-brand project, test small samples before baking a finished design you have spent hours creating.
Let It Cool Before You Judge the Result
When the timer ends, remove the tray carefully and let the clay cool on its baking surface. Freshly baked polymer clay can feel softer than expected while warm. This is normal, particularly with thin details and flexible formulations. It generally firms up as it reaches room temperature.
Resist squeezing beads or bending a pendant to test it straight from the oven. Not only can this misshape a warm piece, it may lead you to think it has failed when it simply needs time to cool. Once cold, a properly cured item should feel solid. Some clay ranges are naturally more flexible than others, so flexibility alone is not proof that it is under-baked.
For jewellery components, allow everything to cool completely before sanding, drilling, adding findings or applying a compatible finish. Rushing this stage can leave fingerprints in a surface you had carefully smoothed.
Solve Common Polymer Clay Baking Problems
The clay has gone brown or yellow
Browning usually means the oven was too hot, the piece sat too close to a heating element, or it baked without protection in an oven with hot spots. Check the thermometer, move the tray to the middle shelf and add a loose foil tent next time. For pale colours, even a small temperature difference can show.
The piece is brittle or breaks easily
Brittleness is often caused by under-curing, although very thin projecting parts will always need sensible handling. Check the thickness at the centre of the project and bake for the full recommended period. Old clay, poorly conditioned clay or incompatible materials can also affect the result, so it is worth testing a small scrap if you are unsure.
There are shiny marks or a textured back
These marks normally come from the surface used during baking. Swap to baking parchment, plain paper or a smooth ceramic tile. If one side of a pendant will be hidden, you may decide a slight mark is not worth worrying about. For double-sided charms and display pieces, support and surface choice become more important.
A delicate piece has drooped
Clay softens before it cures, so unsupported shapes can shift under their own weight. Build foil supports beneath overhanging parts and bake the piece on a stable base. For complex sculptures, baking in stages can help: cure a core form first, add details afterwards, then bake again following the clay’s instructions.
Make Room for Safe, Happy Crafting
Use good ventilation and keep your clay tools, tray and work surface separate from food preparation. Wash hands after working, particularly before snacks or drinks, and supervise children closely around the oven. Polymer clay is brilliant for family creativity, but the baking stage is an adult job.
